Just Call it Halloween and Get over it!

If a church has a function on October 31st that involves candy and costumes, it's a Halloween event! "No Bob, you're wrong! It's a Harvest, Holy, Happy Night!!" Wrong. It's a Halloween event.

I understand the desire to create a safe and fun alternative to Halloween. But let's call it what it is: Halloween. We aren't doing this event in July or April. We're handing out candy and putting on costumes on the same day everyone else is - Halloween.

If you want unchurched teenagers to attend your event, unless they're farmers, Harvest night won't make sense. "Halloween" will. I think we change the name because it makes us feel as though we aren't celebrating the bad "holiday".

To reiterate: if you putting on a costume and giving and receiving candy, then you're celebrating Halloween. Shakespeare wrote, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Translation: if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...I think you get the point.

So can we all officially get over it and just call it what it is? a Halloween event.

Thank you - Rant over...and Happy Halloween :)

World Series Champs!!!!!!

They scared me a few times, but the Sox proved what they were made of as they dominated the Rockies!!!!

I waited all my life to see the Sox win in 2004. Another title 3 years later is unbelievable!!!!

Is everyone is a Heretic? I think so...

We live in interesting times. The more I read, the more I hear of people calling other people heretics. So let's see if we can get this straight for all of us keeping score at home...

Mark Driscoll outs the Emergent guys...

John McArthur outs Driscoll...

The non-Calvinists out McArthur...

The Calvinists out the Arminians...

The pre-wrath guys out the 'Left Behind' Crowd...

The Left Behind crowd out the Amillennials...

The cessationists out the Charismaniacs...

And the Charismaniacs out every imaginable demon...

So I'm calling it right now... everyone's a heretic... except me and you (and I'm not so sure about you) :)

History of Religion

I was sent this today. It's a history of religion throughout the world. Pretty fascinating...

Here's the link if the graphic is too small: http://www.mapsofwar.com/ind/history-of-religion.html

I can't speak for the rest of the site, but this presentation was interesting...

The Standing Egg

I mentioned this in a recent post, but failed to post this picture. Here's a picture of an egg standing straight up on the Fall Equinox. I don't understand this stuff (my wife tried to explain it to me), but it has something to do with the rotation of the earth... enjoy. Egg1

Book Review: Leadership

I was given Leadership by Tom Peters as a gift, so I decided to give it a read. I didn't love it. It had some good insights, but nothing that blew me away.

Here's a couple of nuggets that were good:

"A leader is a dealer in hope."

"Leaders don't 'want to win'. Effective leaders 'need to win.'"

"Effective leaders exude a sense of confidence and determination that inspires others."

OOOOOHHHH YEAH!!!!!!!!!

We're headed back to the World Series! What an amazing series!

Everyone's asleep in my house, but I'm jumping up and down, fist pumping, and celebrating silently :)

Best birthday present ever!!!!!!!!!!

Sunday Night Thoughts...

- Today was my birthday. It was a great day! Mia got me an awesome card!
- I felt great about the message. I don't know if God spoke to anyone else, but God spoke to me :)
- Tons of first time guests today, which was great.
- My friend Gus from Calvary Coral Springs was at our church today. It was great to see him and meet some of his team.
- We're having Pastors visiting us just about every week. I'm starting to feel like I'm living in Atlanta. All I need now is an accent and sweet tea :)
- Every week I have this feeling: who are these people? So many new faces lately.
- Like ships passing in the night: The Patriots are headed for a perfect season... as are the Dolphins :)
- I saw Transformers yesterday. Totally disappointed. This one was waaaay better!
- Mark and the band were great today. These guys never cease to amaze me.
- Today we announced "Worship 4 Africa". It's a concert we're doing to raise money for missions. We're really excited about it and we're hoping to raise a bunch of money to give away!
- Our worship band, our youth band, and another church's worship band are going to play at the concert. It's going to be great!
- Got a bunch of Gift cards to the Apple store. iPhone, I hear you calling me :)
- The Red Sox better win tonight or I'm going to lose my mind!
- My fantasy football team (Dungeons and dragons for jocks) is rockin' worlds! I'd like to officially thank Tom Brady for carrying my team so far!
- People asked me what it was like to see O.J. up close. It was killer :)

B-Day and O.J...

My staff took me out to lunch for my birthday (it's on Sunday) to my favorite restaurant, P.F. Chang's. (Monogolian Beef baby!)

As we were waiting to get our table, Mark recognizes a guy walking out of the restaurant. Who? O.J. Simpson.

I thought he'd be taller :)
