Sunday Thoughts...

- Today was great! I didn't teach :)
- John did a great job of teaching on the Last Supper and asking the question, "Is it I?"
- Communion is always a special time. I loved it.
- It was really good to walk around and check some areas of the church I don't get to see very often. We call it MBWA.
- I was great to talk to some servants in out church I don't see very often and see how they're doing
- Everyone was asking me about the Patriots. Yes it was glorious! But there's work to be done...
-My daughter turned 11 months old today. I cannot believe how fast the time has gone!
-It looks like I'm going to win 3rd place in my fantasy league. Not bad for my first time out, but if it wasn't for 1 blizzard weekend, I'd be in it to win it.
- Looks like Steve Carr is going to take his place as fantasy champion of the world. Congrats bro! I'm still hurting over you beating me due to bad weather. I'm going to hang out outside in shorts tomorrow in 80 degree weather, drink a lemonade and think it over :)
- I have grown more in 2007 than in any other year of my life. More on that later...
- 2007 was the best year of my life, hands down! I can't wait for 2008!

Book Review: Eat That Frog!

51h2v6kubll_bo2204203200_pisitbdp50Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy gives us 21 ways to stop procrastinating and start getting things done. I don't consider myself a procrastinator, but I am huge fan of efficiency and working smart, so I love reading on this subject. I'm always looking for tips to be more effective.

The truth is that we all have limited time. Our goal should be to get the most important things done (The frogs) and delete or delegate the rest. I found the book helpful. This is a great read if you're looking for something quick that can get you going in the right direction.

This is a great type of book to read in preparation of a new year!

Questions to Prepare for 2008

I am very big on goal setting and planning. So I thought I'd post some of the questions I'm asking myself as we inch closer to 2008.

1. How can I be a better follower of Jesus, husband, dad, and friend in 2008?
2. How can I be a more faithful Pastor and leader in 2008?
3. Where do I want my time to go in 2008?
4. Am I doing things that either need to be delegated or deleted?
5. Am I planning to take a Sabbath every week?
6. How am I going to take care of myself physically in 2008?
7. Have I put together a budget that honors God and meets the needs of my family?
8. How many books am I going to read?
9. What is my Bible reading plan for 2008?
10. How can I take my service to God to the next level?
11. What are the relationships I need to nurture or cut next year?
12. How am I going to grow as a leader?
13. Am I committed to growing in giving and modeling generosity to my church?
14. How am I going to stir up my gifts and give those time and attention?

This list is a start. I pray 2008 is your best year yet!

Merry Christmas!

Sunday Thoughts

- Today had to be the weirdest day for me
- I woke up at 3:30AM and couldn't fall back asleep. So I got an early start and worked on my message
- Then my dad called me and told me my uncle died. I was closer to him than any of my other uncles. Needless to say, it was a rough morning for me.
- The new service times went really well. It worked well to add some people to our first service and open up seats in our later service.
- Our band rocked out some Christmas carols. It was awesome!
- I've been sick since Wednesday. I still can't breathe out of both nostrils.
- Carey almost broke her toe yesterday. It hasn't been an easy weekend for us :)
- My fantasy team woke up today. Thank you!
- The Patriots are 15-0! I can't wait for them to pound Eli Manning next week and seal the deal!
- I'm so thankful for having the next 2 days off.
- This week will be filled with "best of" and "Year in Review" posts. So buyer beware :)

In the spirit of Pork related posts...

I was walking into the supermarket and just had to take a picture of this. It only makes sense if you live in Miami. If you don't, it's just weird! Img_0114

Some People just don't get it!

I don't know if this is going to allow people to have a Happy Hanukkah...Wellwhoops

Book Review: Moneyball

41vsm8q2fxl_bo2204203200_pisitbdp50I've had this book of my list of books to read for 3 years. I've hesitated posting this review because I haven't stopped thinking about this book since I read it. Moneyball by Michael Lewis is a great book about the Oakland A's and Billy Beane their general manager. It's their story of how they compete and succeed in a market where players make millions of dollars which they cannot pay. So they have to find alternate ways of getting quality players to compete. It's a great book if you're a baseball fan and an interesting read if you're a leader.

In the church, especially younger churches, we face a similar challenge to Beane's. You generally can't go out and hire high priced team members like larger, more established churches. So what do you do? You have to find other means of recruiting, developing, discipling, and training leaders. Honestly, it's a great challenge and it's the way it should be. When I can go out and hire all the "impact players" I need to "do" church, I've failed in my responsibility as a Pastor. If Ephesians 4:11-12 is still true, then my job is to equip people for ministry and get out of the way while they use their God given gifts within the body of Christ. If I go out and hire every position that opens up on our staff with people from outside, I've relegated discipleship to someone else (and turned into the church version of the New York Yankees, which is never good).

Anyway, I doubt this was Lewis' intention when writing the book, but the book really challenged me to take a more active role in developing servant leaders who understand their gifts and are in places where they can use those gifts and make the greatest contribution to the Kingdom.

This book is a great read! I highly recommend it!

Sunday Night Thoughts (Monday Edition)

- Sunday was amazing! I talk another very un-Christmas message and we had a packed house.
- I almost called the message, "Satan, the Anti-Christ and You!", but thought that might be over the top :)
- We usually flatline attendance wise for December, but we're seeing a nice upward trend
- Teaching on Hanukkah in part of my message was a lot of fun. I love telling that story.
- Tons of first time guests today. Our Ten Minute Party was slammed! We ran out of gifts for people and had to scramble to get more together!
- This Sunday our service times are changing! We're going to 9:30AM and 10:45AM. I think this will be much better and even out the attendance and both services.
- We're doing a Christmas offering this year and raising money for missions all over the world. I'm amazing by the generosity of our church! I'm honored to be the Pastor here!
- I had a great time teaching at a friend's church on Sunday night.
- I never get tired of teaching on John the Baptist. If all Baptists were like him, I'd become one :)
- My fantasy team collapsed this week. Tom Brady let me down with a 3 point performance. I made the playoffs. I was up by 20 points after last week and then the collapse. Depressing!
- I'm working on my personal goals for next year (more on that later). Everyone should seek God and see where He wants them to focus in the upcoming year personally, spiritually, financially, etc...
- I'm looking forward to our Christmas celebration this weekend. I can't wait to see what God does!
