#4 - I was afraid to teach on stewardship
Nobody likes to talk about money. Mostly
because we don't want to get lumped into the whole "TV Preacher begging for money"
camp. But what it took me a while to realize is that I was robbing people of the
opportunity and joy of giving to God. So I decided to start being intentional about
teaching on stewardship. We hosted Crown seminars, Crown small groups, and
stewardship messages at appropriate times. Do you know what I found? People thanked
me for teaching on the subject of money. This is a mistake I never want to repeat.
God promises to honor those who honor Him with their finances and we need to let
people know that...
This is one of the things we've said from the beginning for our upcoming church plant (our first service is in 3 weeks, yikes!)... we don't want to be the church afraid to talk about money. I think the key behind preaching about money and giving is that it's not about "giving us your money" so that we can provide better services for you... but it's more a form of worship and sacrifice.
Just kind of saying to God - "the world tells me that this is important to have and that I'm a fool for getting rid of it, but your riches are greater than what the world has to offer."
I think the problem is not that people have a lack of willingness to give money, but a lack of understanding as to why they should. And when you educate them on the purpose and value behind giving they are thankful to hear it.
